Women who are in their reproductive years are susceptible to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition. If you have PCOS, your periods could not be regular. Or perhaps your menstrual cycles are particularly long. You might have an overabundance of the hormone androgen. In those with PCOS, many small sacs of fluid develop along the ovary's outer border. Cysts exist for what they do. Eggs are growing inside the little cysts that are fluid-filled. They're called follicles. Regularly, the follicles stop producing eggs. For PCOS, there is no known etiology.
