The artificial insemination technique known as intrauterine insemination (IUI) is used to treat infertility. When your ovary releases one or more eggs for fertilisation, concentrated and washed sperm are directly injected into your uterus. The intended result of intrauterine insemination is for the sperm to travel into the fallopian tube, fertilise an egg that is already mature, and produce a pregnancy. The visit for intrauterine insemination lasts about 15 to 20 minutes and is typically performed in a doctor's office or clinic. Depending on the causes of infertility, IUI can be timed with your regular cycle or with fertility medications. IUI only takes a few minutes to complete and doesn't involve any drugs or analgesics. The procedure is carried out by your doctor or a nurse with specialised training. You spend a brief time on your back after fertilisation. You can get dressed and resume your regular daily activities as soon as the procedure is finished. After the procedure, you might experience some light spotting for a day or two.
