Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertilization treatment in which semen is implanted directly into a woman's uterus. During a natural pregnancy, the sperm must travel from the vagina through the cervix to the uterus and into the fallopian tubes. In IUI, the male gametes are "washed out" and concentrated and inserted directly into the uterus, which brings them closer to the egg. This process increases the chances of getting pregnant in some couples who have had difficulty conceiving. IUI is a relatively non-invasive procedure. and fertility-reducing treatments compared to more invasive and costly treatments, such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF). In some cases, couples can start with an IUI before switching to IVF, if necessary. IUI may be the only treatment for pregnancy. IUI is a relatively painless, non-invasive procedure. IUI is sometimes referred to as the "natural cycle", which means that no medication is given. A woman's ovaries are natural, and during ovulation, male gametes are placed in a doctor's office. IUI can be combined with ovarian stimulation. Drugs such as clomiphene citrate (Clomid), hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) can be used to stimulate ovarian maturation and to produce eggs or multiple eggs. Superovulation with more than one egg often increases the chances of getting pregnant.
