From no treatment at all to surgery, fibroids can be treated in various ways. Treatment is typically not required unless fibroids are causing excessive bleeding, discomfort, or bladder issues. If you have fibroids, you should be checked out on a regular basis to review your symptoms and have your abdomen and pelvis checked to check the size of the fibroids and your uterus. Routine pelvic ultrasounds offer very little benefit if you are symptom-free. Fibroids are likely to increase in size annually until menopause, but this isn't a sign that you need treatment unless the growth is accompanied by incapacitating symptoms. At the moment, fibroids are only treated with medications that temporarily alleviate symptoms. Before having surgery, it is worthwhile for women with heavy bleeding to try medication. There are currently no treatments that will help women with pressure symptoms brought on by large fibroids.
