Intrauterine insemination, also known as IUI, is a form of artificial insemination used to treat infertility. Concentrated and washed sperm are directly injected into your uterus when your ovary releases one or more eggs for fertilisation. Intrauterine insemination is intended to result in a pregnancy by allowing the sperm to enter the fallopian tube, fertilise an egg that is already mature, and travel to the uterus. The procedure for intrauterine insemination typically takes place in a doctor's office or clinic and lasts for 15 to 20 minutes. IUI can be timed with your regular cycle or with fertility drugs, depending on the reasons for infertility. IUI is a quick procedure that doesn't require any analgesics or drugs to complete. Your doctor or a nurse with specialised training performs the procedure. After fertilisation, you briefly lie on your back. As soon as the procedure is finished, you can start getting dressed and carrying on with your regular daily activities. You might experience some light spotting for a day or two following the procedure.
