Fibroids can be treated in a variety of ways, from surgery to no treatment at all. Unless fibroids are causing excessive bleeding, discomfort, or bladder problems, treatment is usually not necessary. If you have fibroids, it is important to have regular checkups to review your symptoms and have your abdomen and pelvis examined to determine the size of your uterus and your fibroids, respectively. If you are symptom-free, routine pelvic ultrasounds are not very helpful. Fibroids are likely to grow in size every year until menopause, but unless the growth is accompanied by debilitating symptoms, you don't necessarily need treatment. Fibroids are currently only managed with medications that mask symptoms momentarily. It makes sense for women with heavy bleeding to try medication before surgery. There are currently no cures for the pressure symptoms that large fibroids in women cause.
