IUI, which is a type of artificial insemination, is a fertility treatment procedure. When your ovary releases one or more fertilized eggs, washed and concentrated sperm is delivered directly to your uterus. The goal of intrauterine insemination is for sperm to enter the fallopian tube and fertilize an already present egg, resulting in pregnancy. Depending on the cause of your infertility, IUI can be combined with your regular cycle or with fertility medications. The procedure usually takes 15 to 20 minutes and is done in a doctor's office or clinic. The IUI procedure itself takes only a few minutes and does not necessitate the use of any medications or pain relievers. Your doctor or a specially trained nurse will perform the procedure.
